i spent most of the day yesterday listening to tex sample talk about electronic and oral culture and the ways that the church needs to learn to engage those cultures. i read tex’s book the spectacle of worship in the wired world a several years ago it s was formative for my thinking about multi sensory approaches to worship.
for a guy born well before 1945 tex is really up to speed on what’s going on out in the real world. his talk was really a multimedia presentation using visual words music and more. he practiced what he preaches and really is down to earth.
a couple things he said stuck in my mind.
- learn to live the practices of the people you want to reach.
- create space (particulary space of resistance) where people outside the church to find a place.
the day long seminars were sponsored by the folks at good samaritan ministries and the journey center at western seminary. it was good stuff.
