this recent article on the Monday Morning Insight Weblog: Bill Maher and Comedy Against Christians suggest that bill maher the host of the hbo talk show real time is anti-christian.
the article quotes maher as saying, many christians pray like they are asking santa claus for gifts. he also raises the inconsistency in many christians in their love of jesus and “love of guns”.
now i must say that maher show isn’t for everyone. but i like the show. he has some great guests on his panel. recent guests i’ve seen included michael eric dyson and cornell west.
i don’t know if any of this is anti christian, but it sure challenges followers of jesus to think about how the way that live our faith is perceived by those who don’t follow jesus.
anti-christian prophetic or just another maher miscue???
hmm…

I happened to be watching the show the night Bill made that quote about Christians. I for one, thought it was thought provoking. Maher was talking about Pres. Bush. Bush was asked what can folks do to help you in this election year, or something like that. To which Bush said, I would just appreciate your prayers. To this Maher said, but what about those that are praying that Bush would loose? Maher went on to ask, does one person’s prayer cancel out another person’s prayer? How does this thing called prayer work?
I thought about this as he was saying it and thought, “yeah, I am a Christian and I am actually praying that Kerry will win.” What gives Christian conservatives the right to assume that God is on Bush’s side or visa versa?
He’s right about the way Christians pray. Prayer as petition makes no sense at all to me. Does divinity not already know what we want? If you REALLY believe divinity is all knowing and all loving then you would trust that you are given everything you need, neither more nor less/
I was just watching Bill Maher for the first time and this man is completely lost. You shouldn’t hold strong opinions about things you don’t understand. I am a Christian Democrat (an oxymoron in some states) but Bill is completely clueless when it comes to the Christian faith.
As far as prayer is concerned, of course God knows what we already need. It’s an act of submitting to Him and humbling ourselves as mere human beings to admit we need His intervention. And as far as it actually works? Even I get confused. All I know is that God has answered several of my prayers, specifically sometimes. Some think it’s just coincidences. But in that case, I’ll keep praying and those “coincidences” will keep happening.
I know this post is a year late, but maybe someone will see it and think there is more to Jesus than the way the secular media presents Him.
Bill Maher is an atheist pushing his views by mocking Christ and his children. Whether or not we can derive anything motivating or useful from his wicked, lost tirades, I still view him mocking my precious Savior and His Kingdom as I would someone who continually mocked one of my children, or my now deceassed mother. It hurts. It does far more harm than good. Bill holds high the banner of intellect and thought, and continues to mock and throw in the dirt anythign sacred that he doesn’t understand. This is not constructive. There aren’t different views on him from a Christian standpoint. What we can do, is hope and pray Bill will actually invite someone on his show, or interview with someone actually mentally equipped to intelligently lay out the beautiful truth that is God’s salvation plan and the Christian world view.
Michael: though what you suggest about Maher may be true shouldn’t those of us who are Jesus followers ask why is it that people like Maher look at us and our faith they way they do?
Steph: I guess I think we haven’t done a very good job expressing the essentials of othe Christin faith so people like Maher have to draw their own conclusions based on what they see.
Mahars proves his ignorance every time he opens his mouth It would do him some good if read and understood books by C.S. Lewis, Chesterton and George Macdonald for starters. They were all Christians who were brilliant and I am sure they would make mince meat out of him in a debate.
Pete, it wouldn’t matter if a Christian theologian could beat Maher in a debate. Maher is pointing to the heart of the Christian faith, where the theological rubber meets the realistic road, in the application of the faith as it’s shown in Christian lives. Maher shows hypocrisy, from his viewpoint, and childishness in the way Christianity is sometimes lived out. If that hurts any Christians, that shows as much any ignorance on Maher’s part as well as an egotistical pride on the part of the offended Christians. Steph, I like what you said about prayer being an act of submitting to God’s will. I agree with that. Prayer is also an act of being conscious of our perceived needs and communicating them to God. But you say that one should not hold strong opinions about things one does not understand. Christians do that a lot, don’t they? God is a great mystery, and yet many Christians have very strong opinions on God. I consider myself a Christian. I grew up in a fundamentalist Bapist family. Life (God) has chewed up my opinions and spat them out. I’ve been a fundamentalist Christian, I’ve been an anti-fundamentalist. I’m at the point where I know I don’t know all that much about God. But I do believe in God, in the presence of love in and around me. I do believe and have experienced truth catching up to me. I know I can’t hold onto my lies and immaturity, and still really feel God’s love. I personally like anyone who takes a scrutinous look at hypocrisy. Jesus did that, himself, and railed against it. And the religious estabilishment of his time killed him for it. Their pride could not suffer the words of truth that Jesus spoke.
Maher can do or say whatever he wishes. He has a pretty successful show on HBO and he must receive tons of mail supporting his anti-Chrisitan stance.
What I don’t understand though, why Christians? What did this group of people do to Maher to make him go bonkers over them?
